If you are staying in the historic city of Zadar, you’ve probably gazed at the horizon and wondered about the long, dramatic island stretching across the sea. That is Dugi Otok (literally meaning "Long Island"), a place where untouched nature, turquoise waters, and peaceful Dalmatian charm still reign supreme. While you could easily spend weeks exploring its hidden coves, a Zadar to Dugi Otok day trip is the perfect way to experience the island's highlights.
How to Get to Dugi Otok: Car Ferry vs. Fast Catamaran
When planning your journey from Zadar, you have two main options depending on whether you are travelling with a vehicle or on foot.
To make the most of your day, we highly recommend taking the early morning Jadrolinija car ferry to Brbinj (a central village on the island) or the TP line fast catamaran to Sali (or GV line for the boat at 10:30 AM).
Option 1: By Car Ferry (Zadar - Brbinj)
If you want to bring your own car or rental vehicle from the mainland, you must take the Jadrolinija car ferry.
Departure point: Gaženica ferry port (located just outside Zadar's old town).
Arrival point: Brbinj, a central village on Dugi Otok.
Best for: Families, travellers with lots of luggage, and those who want to drive their own vehicle across the 45-kilometer-long island.
Option 2: By Passenger Catamaran (Zadar - Sali / Zaglav)
If you are travelling on foot, the fast passenger catamaran is the quickest and most practical way to reach the island.
Departure point: The old town waterfront (Poluotok) in Zadar.
Arrival point: Sali (the main cultural hub) or Zaglav (southern part of the island).
Best for: Day-trippers, backpackers, and anyone looking for a car-free island experience.

Travelling to Dugi Otok without a car is remarkably easy, budget-friendly, and scenic. The most convenient way is to take the passenger catamaran right from Zadar’s historic center.
Morning Departure: Hop on the passenger catamaran at the old town waterfront in Zadar. Enjoy a morning breeze on the deck as you cruise past the islands.
Arrive in Sali: In approximately 45 minutes, you will arrive right in the heart of Sali, the main town on Dugi Otok.
Easy Booking: Tickets can be purchased online in advance or at the Jadrolinija/G&V Line kiosk before boarding.
No car? No problem! Dugi Otok is 45 kilometers long, but arriving on foot doesn't mean you are stuck. You can spend your day exploring Sali, visiting the nearby Telašćica Nature Park, or joining an organized boat trip to Kornati National Park.
Local Tip: If you want to see the whole island but arrived by catamaran, you can easily rent a car, a scooter, a bike, or an e-bike directly through Adamo travel upon your arrival in Sali!
The Ultimate One-Day Itinerary
To help you maximize your time on the island (whether you brought a car or rented wheels in Sali), we have crafted the ultimate one-day itinerary.
10:00 AM – Caribbean Vibes at Sakarun Bay
Heading north first, your first major stop is the world-famous Sakarun Beach. Known for its white sand and intense turquoise waters, Sakarun looks more like the Caribbean than the Adriatic. Because you arrived early, you’ll catch the beach at its quietest and most magical. Spend an hour swimming in the shallow, crystal-clear lagoon or enjoying a morning coffee under the shade of the pine trees.

12:00 PM – The Giant of the Adriatic: Veli Rat Lighthouse
Just a short drive further north stands the majestic Veli Rat Lighthouse. Built in 1849, it is the tallest lighthouse in the Adriatic (42 meters). Legend has it that 100,000 egg whites were used in the yellow plaster to protect it against the salty sea winds. Walk through the surrounding pine forest and take in the panoramic open-sea views.

1:30 PM – Lunch in Sali, the Island’s Heart
Drive south towards Sali, the cultural and administrative center of the island. Sali is a charming fishermen's village with a beautiful harbor (Lungomare).
Stop by the Adamo travel office right on the waterfront to say hello, grab a map, or get some insider recommendations! For lunch, sit at one of the local taverns (konoba) and enjoy fresh seafood, locally sourced olive oil, and a glass of domestic Maraština wine.

3:30 PM – Exploring Nature Park Telašćica & Lake Mir
After lunch, it’s time to explore the southern crown jewel: Nature Park Telašćica. Located right next to Kornati Islands National Park, Telašćica is a stunning contrast of peaceful bays and dramatic landscapes.
The "Stene" Cliffs: Walk up to the massive vertical cliffs that rise up to 160 meters above the sea. The view of the open ocean from here is unforgettable.
Lake Mir: Take a walk around this unique, saltwater lake. Because it is connected to the sea through underground channels, the water here is warmer than the surrounding ocean and is believed to have therapeutic mud.
6:00 PM – Sunset and Departure
As the day winds down, head back to the port. If you are catching the catamaran from Sali or the ferry from Brbinj, you might catch one of the most beautiful sunsets in Croatia over the open sea.
